‘Dukes of Hazzard’ Actor and Former Congressman Ben Jones Dies at 84

Ben Jones, best known for playing the beloved mechanic Cooter Davenport on The Dukes of Hazzard, has died at the age of 84.

According to his wife, Alma Viator, Jones died on Sunday after suffering a massive heart attack at his home. She remembered him as a man who lived a full and happy life, surrounded by family, love, and the people who mattered most to him.

Born on August 30, 1941, in Tarboro, North Carolina, Jones grew up in Portsmouth, Virginia. He later studied radio, television, and motion pictures at the University of North Carolina before beginning his acting career in theater.

His early career included appearances in films such as Together for Days, The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings, Smokey and the Bandit, and The Lincoln Conspiracy. But his defining role came in 1979, when he joined The Dukes of Hazzard as Cooter Davenport, the friendly mechanic and longtime friend of the Duke family.

Jones quickly became a fan favorite. Cooter was more than just a mechanic—he was a trusted friend, a source of humor, and one of the show’s most recognizable supporting characters. Jones appeared in 141 episodes during the series’ original run, which continued through 1985.
