At 64, Eleanor had always tried to keep the peace with her neighbors. She believed that a little patience could prevent unnecessary arguments and that most disagreements were better handled quietly.
But when her electricity bill suddenly jumped to $227, she knew something wasn’t right.
She checked her appliances, inspected the meter, and eventually discovered the reason: her neighbor Monica had been secretly using an outlet connected to Eleanor’s garage to charge her Tesla.
When Eleanor confronted her, Monica showed surprisingly little remorse.
Instead of apologizing, she argued that Eleanor lived alone and therefore didn’t need that much electricity. Then she offered her ten dollars and accused Eleanor of being greedy.
It wasn’t the first time Monica had crossed a boundary.
Eleanor’s garden gnome had mysteriously disappeared weeks earlier, only to turn up in Monica’s yard—freshly painted blue. A lawn mower had also vanished and later returned damaged and nearly empty of fuel.
Eleanor had stayed quiet.
She told herself that avoiding conflict was easier than creating tension with someone who lived so close.
But this time, something changed.
She retrieved her garden gnome and placed it beside the garage outlet. Then she prepared a harmless surprise for Monica.
That evening, Monica returned with her Tesla and walked toward the outlet as though nothing had happened.
When she moved the garden gnome, a hidden mechanism released a burst of bright pink washable paint directly over her head and clothes.
Monica screamed.
The noise brought several neighbors outside, and some immediately began recording what was happening.
Eleanor calmly explained what had happened with the electricity. She also reminded everyone about the missing garden gnome and the damaged lawn mower.
Then something unexpected happened.
Other neighbors began speaking up.
One person described missing tools. Another mentioned unauthorized use of their outdoor electrical outlet. Someone else recalled property that had disappeared and later turned up at Monica’s home.
Eleanor suddenly realized she hadn’t been the only person quietly tolerating Monica’s behavior.
