For decades, Tim Curry captivated audiences with unforgettable performances, from Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show to Pennywise in It. Behind those legendary characters, however, was a deeply personal health journey. In 2012, Curry suffered a major stroke that dramatically changed his life. The emergency was so serious that doctors performed a craniectomy to relieve dangerous pressure on his brain, beginning a long and difficult road to recovery.
Curry later spoke about having to relearn how to speak and undergoing extensive physical and speech therapy. The stroke left him with lasting mobility difficulties, particularly affecting his left side, and he eventually relied on a wheelchair. Despite these challenges, he continued finding ways to work and stay connected with audiences. Voice acting became especially important, allowing him to continue using the distinctive talent that had made him famous around the world.
Before his health crisis, Curry had built an extraordinary career across theater, film, television, and music. His portrayal of Frank-N-Furter transformed him into a cult icon, while his performance as Pennywise introduced his talent to a whole new generation. He also appeared in Muppet Treasure Island, Clue, Annie, Legend, and many other productions.
