A few days later, something similar happened at my parents’ house. My mom found a strange metallic object in my dad’s drawer. It was curved and had parts that looked as though they could fold or extend. None of us recognized it. We started guessing—an old medical instrument, an appliance attachment, maybe something from a workshop. Eventually, we searched for the answer and discovered it was actually a vintage kitchen accessory connected to an older household appliance. It had once served a practical purpose during food preparation. What seemed strange was simply an old tool without any context.
Both experiences reminded me how quickly the mind can turn an unfamiliar object into a mystery. We naturally fill gaps with guesses, even when the truth is usually much simpler. Sometimes the object isn’t strange at all—we simply don’t know its story yet. And sometimes, all that’s missing is a little context.
