Most people see pennies as nearly worthless, but for Otha Anders, a retired teacher from Louisiana, they became daily reminders to be grateful. Beginning in the late 1960s, Otha made a habit of collecting every penny he found, using each one as a reminder to pause and offer a silent prayer of thanks.
Unlike traditional coin collectors, Otha wasn’t searching for rare coins or trying to build a valuable collection. Each penny represented something much more meaningful to him—a small moment of mindfulness and appreciation for the blessings in his life. Over the years, his collection grew until he had filled 15 five-gallon jugs, which he affectionately called his “pennies for prayers.”
