Why Do We Drool in Our Sleep? The Surprising Reason It Happens

Waking up with a damp pillow can be embarrassing, but nighttime drooling is actually very common and usually harmless. During sleep, the muscles involved in swallowing relax, allowing saliva to collect in the mouth. If your mouth opens slightly while you’re sleeping, that saliva can escape. For most people, it is simply a normal result of the body relaxing during sleep.

Your sleeping position can make a difference, too. People who sleep on their sides or stomachs may be more likely to drool because gravity allows saliva to move toward the edge of the mouth. Sleeping on your back may reduce it by helping keep saliva inside the mouth. Mouth breathing can also contribute, particularly when allergies, a cold, sinus congestion, enlarged tonsils, or other nasal problems make breathing through the nose more difficult.
