The Simple Sink Trick Travelers Swear By—Why an Upside-Down Glass Can Make a Big Difference

Before leaving home for a vacation, most people have a familiar checklist: lock the doors, unplug appliances, secure the windows, and make sure everything is ready for their return. But there is one small area that is surprisingly easy to forget—the sinks.

When a kitchen or bathroom sink sits unused for days or weeks, unpleasant odors can sometimes develop as plumbing traps lose moisture. In warm conditions, the area around an unused drain can also become attractive to small insects. Coming home after a relaxing trip only to discover a strange smell—or unexpected visitors near the sink—is certainly not the welcome anyone wants.

Fortunately, there is a remarkably simple trick that requires almost no effort.

After cleaning and drying your sink, place a paper towel over the drain and set an upside-down drinking glass over it. The paper towel helps cover the opening, while the glass adds another physical barrier over the drain. Together, they can help discourage insects and reduce the movement of unpleasant odors from the plumbing into the room.

It may look like an unusual solution, but that is part of what makes the trick so appealing. You don’t need expensive equipment or complicated plumbing products. A few seconds of preparation can provide an additional layer of protection while your home is empty.

And there is another simple step you can take before covering the drain that may make the whole routine even more effective.
