Mia’s fence was completely legal.
Claire had been wrong.
But the inspection wasn’t over.
As the inspector looked around the properties, he noticed something else—something that had nothing to do with Mia’s fence.
He examined Claire’s newly installed landscaping.
The stone border, shrubs, and irrigation system appeared to cross the property line.
After taking measurements, the inspector discovered that Claire’s landscaping extended nearly three feet onto Mia’s property—and part of it was also inside a city utility easement.
The very neighbor who had reported Mia for a supposed violation had unknowingly created a much bigger problem on her own property.
Claire was devastated.
She had spent thousands of dollars on the landscaping, and now she would have to remove or relocate parts of it.
But the experience gave Claire a much-needed wake-up call.
She realized that she had spent so much time looking for problems in Mia’s life that she had completely overlooked her own mistake.
Claire sincerely apologized.
Mia accepted the apology, and over time, the tension between them finally disappeared.
The wind chimes stayed exactly where they were.
And Claire never complained about them again.
