For twenty years, I believed I knew everything important about my husband.
I knew how we met. I knew the story of our marriage. I knew the difficult journey that eventually led us to becoming parents.
Or at least, I thought I did.
There had always been one thing I never completely understood: the tattoo on my husband’s chest.
A rose.
He had gotten it years ago, long before we were married, and whenever I asked about it, he gave me the same vague explanation.
“It was a long time ago,” he would say.
I never pushed too hard.
Until one day, I found a photograph hidden among his things.
It showed a woman I had never seen before.
Then I noticed something that made my stomach drop.
The woman in the photograph was standing beside my husband.
And wrapped in his arms was a tiny newborn baby covered in the same blanket I remembered from the beginning of our daughter’s life.
On the back of the photograph was a short handwritten message:
“Please forgive me.”
My hands began to shake.
Suddenly, twenty years of memories seemed to take on a completely different meaning.
Who was this woman?
Why was my husband holding a newborn?
And what did she have to do with the tattoo he had carried on his chest for two decades?
For a moment, I wondered if I was looking at evidence of an affair.
Then another possibility crossed my mind—one that frightened me even more.
What if the story we had been told about our daughter’s adoption wasn’t the whole truth?
I found a phone number connected to the photograph.
After staring at it for several minutes, I finally dialed.
A stranger answered.
We arranged to meet at a diner.
I walked through the door expecting the worst.
Instead, I saw an older woman sitting alone at a table.
She looked exhausted, almost as nervous as I was.
Then I noticed something familiar.
A small rose was tucked behind her ear.
It was the same rose I had seen in the photograph.
She looked at me and quietly introduced herself.
Her name was Rose.
Then she said my daughter’s name with such tenderness that I could barely breathe.
That was when I realized this wasn’t the story I had imagined.
