The Cello That Suddenly Disappeared
The page trembled in my father’s hand as Grandma stood calmly across from him, the brand-new swimming pool humming behind us.
“What is this?” Dad asked, his face suddenly pale.
Grandma looked directly at him and replied quietly, “You know exactly what it is.”
Six weeks earlier, I had discovered that my eleven-year-old daughter Lucy’s antique cello was missing. The stand was still in its usual place, but the instrument itself had vanished.
When I asked my parents what had happened, Dad casually told me they had sold it.
I was stunned when my mother revealed that the cello had been sold for $87,000.
Outside, a massive swimming pool was being constructed in their backyard. Dad insisted that Lucy was too young to understand the value of the instrument and argued that she could simply use a student cello instead.
But Lucy never complained.
One evening, she stood quietly beside the empty cello stand and asked, “Did I do something wrong?”
My heart broke.
I reassured her that she had done absolutely nothing wrong, but deep down, I knew something had to be done.
The cello was not an ordinary instrument. It had been passed down through our family for generations, and Grandma had specifically given it to Lucy.
When I told Grandma what had happened—including the fact that the money had been used to build the pool—she listened without interrupting.
But she had only one question.
“What about Lucy?”
Once she learned that Lucy believed her grandmother had changed her mind and taken away the cello, Grandma’s expression changed completely.
Six weeks later, she arrived at the pool party with her lawyer.
And she was carrying the original documents.
