The happiest moment of my life turned into confusion within minutes.
My wife Natalie and I had just left the doctor’s office after hearing our baby’s heartbeat for the first time. We were still smiling as we walked toward the parking lot, talking about nursery colors, baby names, and the life we were about to begin together.
Then we reached my car.
Across the driver’s side door, someone had spray-painted a message in large, unmistakable letters:
“Hope She Was Worth It.”
My heart dropped.
Natalie stared at the words, then looked at me.
“I have never cheated on you,” I said immediately.
She didn’t accuse me of anything, but I could see how deeply the message had shaken her. A few minutes earlier, we had been celebrating our future. Now, someone had deliberately placed a question between us.
Confused and hurt, Natalie called her mother to pick her up.
I watched her leave, then stood alone beside the car, trying to understand who could have done something so cruel.
That night, I began scrubbing the paint from the door.
The words were slowly disappearing when I heard footsteps behind me.
A familiar voice spoke with unmistakable confidence.
“Don’t bother thanking me. You’re welcome.”
I turned around.
Standing there was Lisa, a former coworker.
She was smiling.
For a moment, I couldn’t understand why she looked so pleased with herself.
“What are you talking about?” I asked.
She glanced at the car.
Then she admitted that she had painted the message.
According to Lisa, Natalie deserved to know “the truth.”
But there was no truth to reveal.
There had never been an affair.
And as Lisa continued speaking, I finally understood that the message on my car had nothing to do with something I had done.
It was about something she had wanted—and had never been able to have.
