It was supposed to be an ordinary Saturday morning. I made a cup of coffee and headed toward the balcony, planning to sit outside and enjoy a few quiet minutes before starting my day.
But the moment I slid open the glass door, I stopped.
Something pale was lying near the railing on the dark gray tiles.
I was certain it hadn’t been there the day before.
The object was only a few centimeters long, but there was something about its strange appearance that immediately caught my attention. It was curved, almost translucent in the morning sunlight, and from where I stood, it looked strangely biological.
At first, I assumed it was a leaf or a small piece of debris that had blown onto the balcony overnight. But the longer I looked, the less likely that seemed.
It wasn’t shaped like a leaf.
It didn’t resemble a pebble or a piece of food either.
And it appeared almost too delicate to be ordinary trash.
My imagination quickly started filling in the missing details. Could it be some kind of caterpillar? A larva? Perhaps something a bird had dropped?
Then another possibility entered my mind.
What if it was part of an insect—or something that had recently been alive?
Normally, unexpected visitors on the balcony didn’t bother me. Leaves, feathers, spiders, insects, and pigeons appeared there regularly.
But this was different.
The object had no obvious legs, wings, eyes, or recognizable head. It was simply a pale, curled shape resting silently on the floor.
I stayed behind the glass and examined it from a distance.
The more uncertain I became, the stranger it seemed.
Had it fallen from one of my plants?
Had a bird carried it there?
Or had some unfamiliar creature found its way onto my balcony during the night?
Eventually, curiosity became stronger than hesitation.
I carefully stepped outside and moved closer.
Under the brighter sunlight, details that had been impossible to see through the glass slowly became visible.
And suddenly, the mysterious object didn’t look nearly as frightening.
What I discovered was surprisingly ordinary.
