The rain had been falling for hours when Elise heard voices downstairs.
At first, she didn’t think much of it.
Her husband, Caleb, occasionally stayed awake late to finish work, and unexpected phone calls weren’t unusual.
But this wasn’t a phone call.
Someone else was inside the house.
Elise stopped halfway down the hallway and listened.
Caleb was speaking quietly with a man she didn’t recognize.
She couldn’t understand every word.
Then she heard something that made her stomach tighten.
“We leave before sunrise.”
Elise froze.
Leave?
Where?
And why hadn’t Caleb told her anything?
She Followed the Voices Upstairs
The men moved toward the attic.
Elise waited until their footsteps disappeared before following at a distance.
Every instinct told her to go back.
Instead, she climbed.
The attic door wasn’t completely closed.
Through the narrow opening, she could see Caleb standing beside several bags.
A stranger was sorting through papers.
Then he placed something on an old wooden table.
A passport.
Another followed.
Then another.
Elise leaned closer.
The photographs looked familiar.
The names didn’t.
Three Names, but the Same Man
Her heart started pounding.
At first, Elise wondered whether she had misunderstood what she was seeing.
Then Caleb picked up one of the passports.
The photograph was unmistakably his.
But the name printed beside it wasn’t Caleb’s.
Neither was the name on the second document.
Three identities.
Three different names.
One husband.
Suddenly, ordinary memories from their marriage began returning with entirely new meanings.
Business trips that had been extended without warning.
Late-night calls Caleb always took outside.
Receipts from places he claimed he had never visited.
Days when his phone remained unreachable.
Explanations that seemed reasonable at the time.
Now Elise wasn’t sure what to believe.
This Hadn’t Started Tonight
The bags made that clear.
Clothing had already been packed.
Documents were organized.
Cash sat inside separate envelopes.
Whatever Caleb was doing, it appeared to have been planned well before that rainy night.
Elise felt as though she were looking at a stranger wearing her husband’s face.
Then the unknown man asked a question.
“What about Elise?”
The attic became silent.
Caleb’s answer was too quiet for her to hear.
But the stranger responded clearly.
“She can’t interfere with this.”
Elise stepped backward.
The floor creaked.
Both men stopped talking.
“Did You Hear That?”
Elise barely breathed.
Footsteps moved toward the attic entrance.
She turned and slipped behind several storage boxes just as the door opened wider.
Caleb looked around.
“Elise?”
She covered her mouth with one hand.
No answer.
Caleb waited.
Finally, the stranger told him they were wasting time.
The two men went downstairs again.
Elise remained frozen for several seconds.
Then her phone vibrated.
She nearly screamed.
The Message Was From Her Sister
It was Mara.
Don’t trust Caleb. Don’t go downstairs. Call me when you’re safe.
Elise stared at the screen.
How did Mara know?
Before she could respond, another message appeared.
The exits are being watched. Stay hidden.
Her confusion became terror.
Watched by whom?
Police?
The stranger downstairs?
Someone else?
She typed a message asking Mara what was happening.
Before she could send it, she heard Caleb’s voice below.
“Her phone is still here.”
Then footsteps started climbing the stairs.
They Were Coming Back
Elise switched her phone to silent.
There wasn’t enough time to reach another room.
The attic had only one normal entrance.
She pushed herself deeper behind the boxes.
The door opened.
Caleb entered first.
The stranger followed.
This time, they weren’t simply collecting documents.
They were searching.
Boxes were pulled aside.
Old furniture moved.
Cabinet doors opened.
“She has to be in this house,” Caleb said.
Elise looked around desperately.
Then she noticed something strange beneath an old rug.
One floorboard didn’t line up with the others.
She pulled the rug back.
It wasn’t a floorboard.
It was a narrow wooden panel.
Behind It Was a Space Between the Walls
Elise lifted it carefully.
A dark opening appeared beneath her.
She had no idea where it led.
There wasn’t time to investigate.
A stack of boxes crashed somewhere behind her.
They were getting closer.
Elise lowered herself through the opening.
Her feet found a narrow wooden beam.
She squeezed into the dark cavity and slowly pulled the panel back into place above her.
Seconds later, someone moved the boxes she had been hiding behind.
“She was here,” the stranger said.
Elise pressed herself against the wall.
Dust filled her nose.
She wanted to cough.
She couldn’t.
Above her, Caleb started tearing through the attic.
