My mother-in-law practically pushed us out the door.
“You two need this,” Monica insisted as she stood in our kitchen holding our four-month-old daughter, Emma.
I checked the diaper bag for the third time.
“We’re fine.”
“You haven’t gone anywhere together since she was born.”
She wasn’t wrong.
Since Emma arrived, our evenings had become an endless cycle of bottles, diapers, laundry, and grabbing whatever sleep we could.
My husband, Daniel, looked at me.
Maybe one evening away really would be good for us.
Monica Had Been Offering for Weeks
“I’ll handle everything,” she promised.
Emma had never spent an entire evening without one of us, so I’d resisted every previous offer.
This time, Monica even volunteered to stay overnight.
“Go somewhere nice. Have dinner. See a movie. Forget you’re parents for a few hours.”
Eventually, I agreed.
Before leaving, I checked the baby monitor.
Emma was asleep.
Monica sat beside her crib.
Everything seemed perfectly normal.
I kissed my daughter’s forehead.
“We’ll be back soon.”
Monica smiled and waved us away.
“Go.”
For the first twenty minutes, it felt wonderful.
Daniel and I drove to a restaurant across town and sat near a window.
No crying.
No bottles.
No checking the clock every five minutes.
Then my phone buzzed.
The Baby Monitor Went Offline
I looked down.
The monitor app had disconnected.
“Probably the Wi-Fi,” Daniel said.
I tried reconnecting.
Nothing.
Then I called Monica.
No answer.
I called again.
Still nothing.
I tried convincing myself there was a perfectly ordinary explanation.
Maybe her phone was on silent.
Maybe Emma had fallen asleep and Monica didn’t want to wake her.
Then the hostess approached our table.
“Excuse me. Are you Daniel and Claire?”
“Yes.”
She smiled politely.
“Your other guest is already here.”
I stared at her.
“We don’t have another guest.”
Her expression changed.
“He gave your name.”
My stomach tightened.
“What man?”
She pointed toward the bar.
A Stranger Was Waiting for Us
A man wearing a dark jacket and baseball cap sat alone with his back toward us.
Daniel immediately stood.
“I don’t know him.”
Neither did I.
Then the stranger turned.
For one uncomfortable second, he looked directly at me.
And then he looked away.
“Let’s go,” Daniel said.
We immediately left the restaurant.
Once inside the car, Daniel called his mother again.
No answer.
I checked the baby monitor.
Still offline.
That’s when panic finally took over.
“We need to go home.”
Daniel didn’t argue.
Emma’s Crib Was Empty
When we reached the house, the front door was locked.
Nothing outside appeared disturbed.
But the lights were on.
We entered.
“Mom?”
Silence.
Then I ran toward Emma’s room.
The crib was empty.
My heart seemed to stop.
A moment later, we heard something downstairs.
A man’s voice.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
We slowly approached the basement.
Standing at the bottom of the stairs was the same stranger we’d seen at the restaurant.
But he wasn’t holding Emma.
He was holding a folder.
“Who are you?” Daniel demanded.
The stranger raised his hands.
“I’m not here to hurt anyone.”
“Where is my daughter?”
“Upstairs with your mother.”
I ran.
Emma was back in her crib, peacefully asleep.
Monica sat beside her.
She looked completely calm.
“What is happening?” I demanded.
Monica stood.
“You weren’t supposed to come home yet.”
