My girlfriend had only been gone for about twenty minutes.
She’d taken our dog outside for his usual evening walk while I stayed home finishing the kitchen.
Nothing about the evening seemed unusual.
Then the front door opened.
I expected to see our dog pulling toward his water bowl as usual.
Instead, something strange caught my attention.
There was something stuck in his fur.
“What Is That?”
A small, translucent object was tangled in the wiry hair along his side.
It was curved, slightly shiny, and partially hidden beneath his coat.
I froze.
“What is that?”
My girlfriend looked down.
“I don’t know.”
Our dog couldn’t have cared less.
He walked past us, sniffed the carpet, shook himself, and headed toward his water.
We weren’t nearly as relaxed.
My girlfriend crouched beside him.
“Don’t touch it.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know. Just don’t.”
That was all my imagination needed.
Our Minds Immediately Went to the Worst Possibilities
Ticks.
Parasites.
Some strange insect.
Something from the park.
Within seconds, an ordinary evening had turned into a miniature emergency.
We began examining him from every angle.
His ears.
His paws.
His belly.
His neck.
Even between his toes.
Every time the light caught another piece of fur, one of us would suddenly stop.
“Wait. What’s that?”
Meanwhile, our dog looked at us as though we were the problem.
I reached for my phone.
“I should probably search for it.”
“Don’t,” my girlfriend immediately replied.
She knew exactly where that would lead.
A simple internet search could transform a mysterious object into every frightening possibility imaginable.
So instead of searching, we kept looking.
It Was Transparent, Curved, and Apparently Wet
That didn’t make us feel any better.
The object had tiny fibers attached to it and looked almost transparent.
It also appeared damp.
“Maybe it’s some kind of insect,” I said.
“It doesn’t look alive.”
“How do you know?”
“Because it hasn’t moved.”
“Maybe it’s pretending.”
She stared at me.
“You’ve watched too many horror movies.”
Fair enough.
Still, neither of us wanted to pull the thing out until we knew what we were dealing with.
Our dog eventually turned around and gave us a look that seemed to say:
Are you two finished yet?
We weren’t.
