Every night during the hottest weeks of summer, Daniel followed the same routine.
He turned on the air conditioner, lowered the temperature, climbed into bed, and pulled a blanket over himself.
The cold air blew directly toward his face.
To Daniel, it felt perfect.
He had occasionally heard people warn against sleeping directly beneath an air conditioner, but he never paid much attention. He assumed the worst consequence would be waking up cold, uncomfortable, or congested.
Then one morning, something happened that made him reconsider everything.
Something Was Wrong With His Smile
Daniel got out of bed and walked into the bathroom as usual.
While brushing his teeth, he glanced into the mirror.
Something looked different.
He smiled.
One side of his face didn’t seem to move normally.
At first, Daniel blamed exhaustion. Maybe he had slept badly. Perhaps his face was simply stiff from lying in the same position for too long.
But when he started testing his facial movements, his concern grew.
He raised his eyebrows.
Closed both eyes tightly.
Puffed out his cheeks.
Smiled again.
One side seemed noticeably weaker and slower than the other.
This wasn’t something he could simply ignore.
His Family Became Concerned Immediately
When Daniel showed his family what was happening, they didn’t want him to wait and see whether it disappeared.
Sudden facial weakness can have several possible explanations, and assuming that cold air caused it could delay medical attention for something more serious.
Daniel couldn’t stop thinking about the air conditioner.
It had been blowing across his face for hours.
Could that really have caused the weakness?
The timing made the connection seem obvious to him.
But timing alone doesn’t establish a cause.
And as Daniel looked into the mirror again, the change in his face became impossible to dismiss.
His family decided he needed medical evaluation.
