While cleaning out an old drawer, I came across something I couldn’t identify.
It was tiny.
Made of brass.
And at first glance, it looked almost like a miniature spoon.
But the scoop was far too small to be useful at the dinner table.
The handle was long and narrow, with several decorative raised rings that made the object look carefully crafted rather than improvised.
I turned it over in my hand.
Was it part of a piece of jewelry?
A miniature kitchen utensil?
Some kind of old tool?
Nothing seemed quite right.
The longer I examined it, the more curious I became.
It Clearly Had a Purpose
The object didn’t look like a toy.
Its shape appeared too deliberate.
The tiny scoop at one end suggested it had been designed to reach or collect something in a very small space.
The narrow handle would have allowed someone to hold it with considerable precision.
That was the biggest clue.
After researching similar antique objects, I discovered a surprisingly plausible explanation.
It was most likely an old-fashioned ear spoon, sometimes called an ear pick.
Ear Spoons Were Personal Grooming Tools
Although they may look strange today, tiny metal implements like these were historically used as personal-care tools.
The small scoop could be used around the outer portion of the ear to remove visible wax, while the narrow handle allowed careful control.
Similar implements could appear in grooming sets alongside other small personal-care tools.
They were sometimes made from durable materials such as brass or silver, which explains why examples can survive for many years.
But that wasn’t necessarily the only possible purpose.
