The red plywood sign above my garage reads:
CRAIG’S AUTO REPAIR.
It’s crooked.
The letters aren’t evenly spaced.
And I wouldn’t replace it for anything.
My sons, Rick and Noah, painted it when they were seven and four.
Every morning when I unlock the shop, that imperfect sign reminds me why I started the business in the first place.
“You’re Going Nowhere in Life”
My wife, Laura, left me for a wealthy car dealer named Brent Harlow.
Compared with Brent, I didn’t have much.
He had money, expensive cars, and a beautiful lake house.
I had grease under my fingernails and two boys who meant more to me than anything else in the world.
When Laura left, she told me something I never forgot.
“You’re going nowhere in life.”
Not long afterward, I lost my dealership job.
So I took what little I had and opened my own repair shop.
I wasn’t trying to impress Laura anymore.
I was trying to build something my sons could depend on.
Then Laura Brought Me Brent’s Mercedes
Even after the divorce, Laura knew exactly how to pressure me.
If she needed something and I refused, she’d remind me that she could make seeing the boys difficult.
Then one day, she arrived at my shop with Brent’s badly damaged Mercedes.
The repair wouldn’t be cheap.
The bill eventually came to around $7,000.
But something about the damage bothered me.
And while inspecting the interior, I found something that immediately made my stomach drop.
It was Noah’s favorite toy dinosaur.
Then I Saw the Booster Seat
There was also a cracked booster seat in the back.
Suddenly, this wasn’t just Brent’s damaged Mercedes.
My children had apparently been inside it.
I started looking more carefully.
The more I examined the vehicle, the worse the situation appeared.
Eventually, I checked the available crash information.
According to the data, the Mercedes had been traveling approximately 58 mph in a 35-mph zone at around 1:42 a.m.
And my sons had been in the back seat.
I needed to know what happened.
Rick Finally Told Me the Truth
When I spoke with Rick, he initially seemed afraid to say anything.
Eventually, the truth came out.
According to him, Brent had been drinking before getting behind the wheel.
The boys were in the car.
Brent crashed into a mailbox and another vehicle.
Then he left the scene.
That alone was horrifying.
But there was more.
Rick told me Laura knew what happened.
And Noah had apparently been told to claim that the injury on his lip came from falling off a swing.
At that moment, the $7,000 repair bill stopped mattering.
I wasn’t thinking like a mechanic anymore.
I was thinking like a father.
