Every Sunday, no matter what else was happening in our lives, we had dinner at Mom’s house.
The tradition became especially important after Dad died three years earlier.
Sunday dinners gave us something familiar to hold onto.
Mom cooked.
My brother Brian and I showed up.
We sat around the same table where we’d eaten together for years and tried to keep a piece of our family routine alive.
So when my phone buzzed one Sunday afternoon, I immediately knew something was wrong.
Mom had sent a short message:
“Please don’t come today.”
That was it.
No explanation.
No reason.
Nothing.
Mom Had Never Canceled Sunday Dinner Like This
I called Brian.
He’d received the same message.
“Something isn’t right,” he said.
I agreed.
We tried calling Mom, but she didn’t give us a convincing explanation.
Eventually, concern won.
Brian and I drove to her house anyway.
I still had a spare key, so when nobody answered the door, we let ourselves inside.
That’s when we saw him.
There Was a Man Sitting at Dad’s Place
A man sat at the kitchen table with his back toward us.
For a second, neither Brian nor I moved.
The shape of his shoulders.
His posture.
Even the back of his head.
He looked exactly like our father.
My mind immediately rejected what my eyes were seeing.
Dad had been dead for three years.
We had attended his funeral.
We had buried him.
Yet there was a man sitting inside Mom’s kitchen who looked so much like him that my entire body went cold.
“Why Didn’t You Listen?”
Mom stood at the counter cutting carrots.
She wouldn’t look at us.
“Mom?”
Nothing.
“Who is that?”
She kept staring down at the cutting board.
Then she whispered:
“Why didn’t you listen?”
The man slowly turned around.
My heart dropped.
He had Dad’s eyes.
Dad’s smile.
Even the familiar gray streak in his hair.
Brian stepped forward.
“Who are you?”
Mom finally turned toward us.
Her eyes were red.
“His name is James,” she said.
I’d never heard that name before.
Dad Had an Identical Twin Brother
Mom took a breath.
Then she told us something that had apparently been buried inside our family for years.
James was Dad’s identical twin brother.
Brian stared at her.
I couldn’t speak.
How could our father have an identical twin we’d never even heard about?
Mom explained that Dad and James had become estranged years earlier.
Dad had cut his brother completely out of his life.
No visits.
No photographs around the house.
No stories for his children.
As far as Brian and I knew, James didn’t exist.
But that wasn’t the only secret Mom had been keeping.
