What Should You Do If You Find a Snake Inside Your Home? Staying Calm and Following a Few Safety Steps Can Help Prevent a Frightening Encounter From Becoming Dangerous

Few things can make someone freeze quite like unexpectedly discovering a snake inside the house.

Maybe it’s stretched across the floor.

Perhaps it’s hiding behind furniture.

Or you suddenly notice movement in a garage, basement, or hallway.

The natural reaction may be to panic, approach it, or immediately try to get it outside.

But rushing toward an unfamiliar snake can make the situation more dangerous.

Instead, the safest first response is often surprisingly simple:

Keep your distance and remain calm.

Why Would a Snake Enter a House?

A snake usually isn’t entering a home because it wants to encounter people.

Several things may draw snakes toward buildings.

They may be searching for shelter, warmth, cooler conditions during extreme heat, or a place protected from bad weather.

Food can also be a major attraction.

If rodents or certain other small prey are present around a property, snakes may follow the same food source.

Once near the building, surprisingly small openings may provide a way inside.

Check Doors, Windows, Pipes, and Foundations

Gaps around doors and windows can create potential entry points.

So can openings around pipes, vents, garages, and foundations.

An opening that looks insignificant to a homeowner may still be large enough for certain snakes to enter.

That’s why discovering a snake indoors should eventually lead to another question:

How did it get inside?

But that question can wait until the immediate situation is handled safely.

Don’t Try to Grab It

If you encounter a snake indoors, don’t rush toward it.

And don’t attempt to pick it up simply because it appears small or harmless.

Correctly identifying snakes can be difficult, particularly for someone without experience.

Keep children and pets away from the area.

Maintain a safe distance yourself.

If nearby doors can be closed without approaching the snake, doing so may help keep it confined to one area.

The priority should be avoiding unnecessary contact.
