For her 78th birthday, all Maria’s mother wanted was a simple dinner at an Italian bistro her church friends had recommended. Dressed in her favorite vintage dress and carrying her worn handbag, she arrived with her daughter, excited to enjoy a special evening. But at the entrance, the hostess looked her up and down, noticed her cane and older handbag, and cruelly told her that she looked “cheap” and that the restaurant was not the right place for her. Maria tried to defend her mother, but the humiliation became too painful, and the elderly woman quietly asked to go home.
Just as they were about to leave, a loud crash came from the kitchen. An elderly chef suddenly appeared and stared at Maria’s mother as though he had seen a ghost.
