Every now and then, a simple question can make you stop and think.
What does the “T” in “T-shirt” actually stand for?
It sounds like there should be some complicated explanation behind it.
Maybe it’s an abbreviation. Maybe it comes from a particular brand. Or perhaps it has something to do with the history of the clothing itself.
But the real answer is much simpler than most people expect.
The “T” doesn’t stand for another word at all.
It describes the shape of the shirt.
Take a traditional T-shirt and lay it flat.
The body creates a long vertical section, while the sleeves extend outward from both sides.
Together, the outline looks remarkably similar to a capital letter “T.”
And that’s where the name comes from.
Simple, right?
Yet there’s more to the story because the T-shirt wasn’t always the everyday fashion staple we know today.
Long before people wore graphic tees, oversized shirts, and designer T-shirts, this simple piece of clothing had a much more practical purpose.
It was originally designed to be worn as an undershirt.
And its simple design turned out to be incredibly useful.
