You May Want to Unplug Your Phone Charger When It’s Not in Use—Especially If It’s Old, Damaged, Overheating, or Sitting Near Flammable Materials

A phone charger left plugged into the wall may look completely harmless.

It sits quietly beside the bed, behind a sofa, or near a desk, even after the phone has been disconnected. Because nothing seems to be happening, most people rarely think about it.

In most cases, a modern charger in good condition will not suddenly become dangerous simply because it remains plugged in.

However, problems can arise when the charger is damaged, poorly made, unusually hot, or placed near materials that can easily catch fire.

That is why a simple habit—unplugging a charger when it is no longer needed—can sometimes reduce unnecessary risk.

A Charger Still Uses a Small Amount of Power

Even when no phone is connected, many chargers can continue drawing a tiny amount of electricity from the outlet.

The amount is usually very small, so one charger alone is unlikely to make a major difference to your electricity bill.

Still, a home filled with devices that remain plugged in all day can gradually increase standby energy use.

Energy waste, however, is only one reason people may choose to unplug chargers.

The more important concern is the condition of the equipment itself.

Damage Can Make a Charger Riskier

A frayed cable, cracked adapter, loose connection, bent plug, or damaged internal component can create conditions that are much less predictable than normal use.

Warning signs can include:

  • unusual heat
  • a burning or plastic-like smell
  • buzzing or crackling
  • discoloration around the plug
  • scorch marks
  • repeated loss of connection

If a charger shows any of these signs, continuing to use it is not worth the risk.

Replace it rather than trying to keep it working for a few more weeks.

But there is another common charging habit that deserves just as much attention.

Where you place the charger can matter almost as much as the charger itself.
