If You Notice These Lines or Ridges on Your Fingernails After 40, Here’s What They Could Mean—and Which Changes Doctors Say You Shouldn’t Ignore

At sixty-two, Elena had never paid much attention to her fingernails.

She kept them clean and neatly trimmed, but otherwise, they were simply something she rarely thought about.

Then one evening, while washing dishes, she noticed something unusual.

A deep horizontal groove crossed several of her nails.

Elena ran a finger over the indentation and immediately remembered an illness she had experienced several months earlier. She assumed the grooves were probably related to aging or whatever stress her body had gone through at the time.

Her daughter wasn’t so quick to dismiss them.

“Maybe you should look at the others too,” she suggested.

So Elena did.

Several fingernails had faint vertical ridges running from the cuticle toward the tip. She also noticed pale markings that she didn’t remember seeing before.

At first, the number of changes worried her.

But nail lines don’t all mean the same thing.

Vertical Ridges Are Often Harmless

Vertical nail ridges can become more noticeable as people get older. In many cases, they don’t indicate a serious health problem.

Changes in nail texture can also occur for numerous reasons, including dryness, repeated minor trauma, and normal changes in nail growth.

Elena’s horizontal grooves were different.

Deep grooves running from side to side are often called Beau’s lines. They can appear when nail growth temporarily slows or stops.

A significant illness, high fever, physical stress, injury, or other disruption can sometimes leave a groove behind as the nail begins growing normally again.

Because fingernails grow slowly, the visible line may appear well after the event that caused the interruption.

That seemed to fit Elena’s experience.

She had been sick months earlier.

But then she noticed something that didn’t fit nearly as comfortably.

One Nail Looked Different

Elena examined her right thumbnail.

A narrow brown streak ran vertically beneath it.

She couldn’t remember hitting the finger or trapping it in anything.

At first, she assumed it was an old bruise.

Then she compared it with a photograph from the previous week.

The streak appeared darker.

Perhaps even slightly wider.

Elena stared at it for several seconds.

She knew searching photographs online wouldn’t tell her what it was.

So the following morning, she made an appointment with her doctor.

That decision became important because while many nail changes are harmless, a new or changing dark streak beneath a nail deserves medical attention.

And Elena was about to learn why.
