This Mysterious 15-Foot Wooden Tower in Oregon Looks Like an Oversized Birdhouse—But Its Surprisingly Simple Purpose Helps Drivers See Around a Dangerous Road

At first glance, the strange wooden tower looks almost pointless.

Standing beside a wooded road near Gresham, Oregon, the narrow structure rises roughly fifteen feet into the air.

It has beige siding.

Near the top is what appears to be a glass or viewing panel.

Surrounded by tall trees, it blends into the landscape so naturally that some people may pass without noticing it.

Those who do notice often have the same question:

What is that thing?

The Guesses Are Understandable

An enormous birdhouse?

A tiny observation tower?

Something designed for watching wildlife?

Perhaps an unusual security structure?

None of those explanations captures its reported purpose.

The tower was designed to solve an everyday problem—one that can become dangerous for people living beside steep, curved, or heavily wooded roads.

The problem is visibility.

Imagine backing or driving out of your driveway while trees, vegetation, a hill, or a sharp bend prevents you from seeing approaching vehicles.

You need a better view of the road.

Today, many people might immediately think of installing a camera.

But this unusual structure uses a much older idea.

It’s Essentially a Giant Periscope

The structure has become known as a driveway periscope.

The name gives away the secret.

A traditional periscope allows someone to see from a position where a direct line of sight isn’t available.

The most famous example is a submarine periscope.

The Oregon structure reportedly applies the same basic optical principle to a driveway.

Instead of looking above the surface of the ocean, however, the driver needs to see around an obstruction.

And the solution requires no digital screen.

No internet connection.

No complicated software.

The secret is inside the tower.

Mirrors Redirect the View

The concept relies on strategically positioned reflective surfaces.

A mirror higher in the structure receives a view of the road that isn’t directly visible from the driver’s position.

That image is redirected through the structure toward another mirror lower down.

The driver can then look into the lower viewing area and see traffic approaching along the otherwise obstructed road.

It sounds almost too simple.

That’s precisely what makes the idea so interesting.

Think About Looking Around a Corner Without Moving

Normally, if a tree-covered slope blocks your view, there’s nothing your eyes can do about it.

Light from the approaching vehicle can’t travel directly to you because something is in the way.

A properly positioned mirror changes the path of that light.

Add another correctly angled reflective surface, and the image can be redirected again toward the observer.

That’s the basic idea behind the structure.

Instead of moving the driver’s eyes fifteen feet into the air, the tower brings the useful view down to the driver.

And it can do so without a camera.
