This Viral Cow Math Puzzle Looks Incredibly Simple at First—But Tracking Every Purchase and Sale Carefully Reveals Why So Many People Get the Wrong Answer

A cow, a few purchases and sales, and one simple question:

How much profit did you make?

It sounds easy.

Yet cow-trading puzzles regularly create surprisingly heated debates online because one small mistake can completely change the answer.

The secret isn’t advanced mathematics.

It’s careful bookkeeping.

Why the Puzzle Becomes Confusing

These puzzles usually involve buying a cow, selling it, buying it again at another price, and selling it a second time.

Many people instinctively compare only the first purchase price with the final selling price.

That’s the mistake.

Once the cow has been sold and purchased again, you’re dealing with two separate buy-and-sell cycles.

Every time you buy, money goes out.

Every time you sell, money comes in.

The easiest formula is therefore:

Total sales − Total purchases = Total profit

Follow Every Dollar

Suppose the transactions are:

Buy the cow: −$800
Sell the cow: +$1,000
Buy it again: −$1,200
Sell it again: +$2,200

Now calculate each trading cycle separately.

The first produces:

$1,000 − $800 = $200 profit

The second produces:

$2,200 − $1,200 = $1,000 profit

So with these particular numbers, the total profit would actually be:

$200 + $1,000 = $1,200

That’s important because the figures in the example above do not produce a $400 answer.

Why the Viral Answer Can Still Be $400

The original puzzle states that the answer is $400, which means its actual transaction amounts must differ from the $800, $1,000, $1,200, and $2,200 example.

This is exactly why viral puzzles should be read carefully.

If the numbers change, the answer changes.

You cannot take the answer from one version and automatically apply it to another.
