Does Anyone Know What This Strange Black Growth Is? The Creepy ‘Dead Man’s Fingers’ Fungus Can Suddenly Appear in Yards Near Decaying Wood

Imagine walking through your yard and noticing something strange sticking out of the ground.

At first, it might look like several dark, blackened fingers pushing through the soil.

It’s easy to understand why someone might stop and wonder:

“What on earth is that?”

One possible explanation for this eerie-looking growth is a fungus commonly known as Dead Man’s Fingers.

The unsettling name comes from its unusual appearance.

Despite looking like something from a horror movie, however, this fungus is part of a natural process happening beneath the ground.

Why Does It Look Like Fingers?

Dead Man’s Fingers produces dark, elongated structures that can grow together in small groups.

When several emerge from the soil or decaying wood at the same time, they may resemble fingers reaching upward.

That appearance is responsible for the memorable name.

Depending on the growth stage and conditions, the fungus may not always look exactly the same.

But once you see where the nickname comes from, it’s difficult to forget.

Why Is It Growing in the Yard?

If Dead Man’s Fingers appears in a garden or yard, there may be decaying wood nearby—even if you can’t immediately see it.

The fungus is associated with dead and deteriorating woody material.

That can include:

  • old tree stumps,
  • buried roots,
  • fallen branches, or
  • decomposing wood beneath mulch.

This explains why the fungus can sometimes appear to be growing directly from ordinary soil.

The food source may actually be hidden underneath.

Damp Conditions Can Encourage Its Appearance

Moisture also plays an important role.

Damp, shaded areas can provide favorable conditions for many fungi.

After periods of suitable moisture, fungal growth may suddenly become much more noticeable.

That doesn’t necessarily mean something has suddenly gone seriously wrong with the yard.

The fungus may simply be taking advantage of moisture and decaying organic material already present.
