If you’ve ever received a wedding invitation or formal event invitation, you may have noticed an RSVP card with a line beginning with the letter “M.”
At first glance, it can seem confusing. Is it asking for your first initial? Is it related to your meal selection?
Actually, the answer is much simpler.
The “M” is the beginning of a courtesy title, traditionally used before a guest’s name.
What Are You Supposed to Write?
Guests traditionally complete the line by adding the title that applies to them, such as:
- Mr.
- Mrs.
- Ms.
- Miss
For example, if your name is John Smith, you might write:
M__ Mr. John Smith
The “M” is not a question and has nothing to do with the meal or menu. It is simply provided as the starting letter of the title.
