The entertainment world is mourning Peter Cullen, the beloved voice actor whose unforgettable performances became part of childhood for millions. Cullen, who died at 85 at his Los Angeles home, was best known as the powerful voice of Optimus Prime in Transformers and the gentle, melancholy Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh. His career stretched across television, film, animation, and video games, giving generations of audiences characters they could instantly recognize.
For many fans, however, Cullen’s voice represented much more than entertainment. It became part of their childhood memories, bringing strength, humor, sadness, and comfort to characters they grew up with. His family said he passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones and encouraged fans to remember his legacy through compassion, integrity, and loyalty.
One of the most meaningful stories behind Cullen’s career involved his older brother, Larry, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in Vietnam. Before auditioning for Optimus Prime in 1984, Cullen asked his brother for advice on portraying a true hero. Larry encouraged him not to make the character loud or aggressive, but instead to be “strong enough to be gentle.”
Cullen carried that idea into the role, giving Optimus Prime a deep, calm voice that conveyed strength, wisdom, and compassion. That decision helped transform the character into an enduring symbol of leadership and heroism.
