Cullen’s talent extended far beyond Optimus Prime. His portrayal of Eeyore brought a tender, weary quality to one of animation’s most memorable characters, while his other work included KARR in Knight Rider, King Kong in the 1976 film, and the eerie vocal effects of the creature in Predator.
He later returned as Optimus Prime for the live-action Transformers films, continuing a role he had first performed decades earlier. His achievements included a Daytime Emmy nomination and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023.
For fans, however, Cullen’s greatest legacy may not be found in awards or credits, but in the feelings his voice created. He could make Optimus Prime sound powerful without losing his humanity, and he could make Eeyore’s sadness feel strangely comforting.
His family’s final message captures the spirit he brought to his work: strength does not always have to be loud. Sometimes the greatest strength is kindness, patience, and compassion.
Peter Cullen’s voice may be gone, but the characters he helped bring to life—and the gentle lesson behind them—will continue to live on for generations.
