Young Tommy had always gone to church with his beloved grandmother, but one Sunday was different. It was time for his first confession, and Tommy was understandably nervous.
His grandmother explained that he would enter a small confessional booth, tell the priest about the things he had done wrong, and receive forgiveness. Tommy listened carefully and tried to remember everything he needed to say.
When he finally entered the confessional, the priest greeted him warmly and encouraged him to begin.
Tommy took a deep breath.
He confessed that he had taken a pencil from school, used a bad word, and told his mother a lie. The priest calmly reassured him that these things could be forgiven and then asked if there was anything else.
Tommy paused.
Then he suddenly remembered something else.
He admitted that he had thrown his sister’s Barbie doll out the window and later told her that the doll had simply run away.
The priest tried very hard not to laugh.
But Tommy still wasn’t finished.
After thinking for another moment, he remembered one more little adventure—something he had done the night before involving Grandpa’s dentures.
And that confession was about to make it very difficult for the priest to keep a straight face.
